RSVP Medical Transportation Program - "Medical Mobility"

What is Medical Mobility?
Medical Mobility is a transportation program within RSVP of Carroll County that provides rides to medical appointments for ambulatory seniors and adults with disabilities.  RSVP’s program allows clients to stay secure, comfortable, independent and living in their homes for as long as possible.
How does it work?
Volunteer drivers use their own cars to transport the clients to their appointments and can wait for the duration of procedure before taking them home. The service is offered throughout Carroll County for older adults and people with disabilities who are not able to drive and do not have family or friends close by to help transport them to their local or long-distant medical related appointments. Rides can be scheduled on weekdays from 8:30am-4pm with the RSVP Transportation Coordinator, and at least 24-hour notice is requested, but rides cannot be guaranteed as they depend on the availability of the volunteer drivers, Medical transportation service is provided at “No Cost” to the client. All clients must be ambulatory.

Dedicated volunteers provide hundreds of rides and opportunities for socialization every year. The Program is successfully meeting specific needs:

  • Service is individually tailored to the needs of the rider, and a volunteer is matched to the need.
  • The driver and vehicle stay with the rider, or the return trip is assured up front, eliminating concerns of being stranded at a destination.
  • The program allows for travel beyond county lines, which is frequently necessary for accessing specialized services.

What is the key to the success of RSVP's Medical Transportation Program?
According to RSVP's transportation coordinator and passengers alike, the key to a successful volunteer driver program is the volunteer drivers; volunteers who want to help others, do something meaningful, and give back. They receive their greatest satisfaction from helping others, being needed, and getting to know the passengers. Their services also contribute to the ability of their passengers to live independently and to age in place and, in many cases, delay their premature institutionalization.

Bone Builders Program
Strengthening seniors one class at a time

Bone Builders was developed in 1996 by a team of exercise specialist from Tufts University and has been tested and used extensively and successfully by hundreds of older adults ranging from 50 to 90 years of age.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends engaging in both weight-bearing exercise (like walking, climbing stairs, dancing and yard work) and muscle-strengthening exercise to build and maintain bone density. It’s never too late to start a bone-healthy program even if you already have osteoporosis.

You may worry that being active means you’re more likely to fall and break a bone; however, the opposite is true. A properly designed consistent exercise program like Bone Builders will actually help prevent falls and fracture. This is because exercise strengthens bones and muscles and improves balance, coordination and flexibility.

Each class consists of a warm-up, balance work, strength-training and a cool down. The class is offered once or twice per week at locations in the community such as senior centers and senior housing faculties.

The program is led by trained RSVP volunteer leaders. The class is FREE. To join a class participates must obtain clearance from their physician. For more information on the Bone Builders Program please contact Doris Dreyer at (603) 356-9331 or doris.ccrsvp@gmail.com
